Muhammadiyah University of Malang (UMM) was established in 1964, on the initiative of luminaries and leaders of Muhammadiyah Malang Area. At the beginning of the founding of University of Muhammadiyah Malang is a branch of University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta, which was established by the Foundation College of Muhammadiyah Jakarta by notarial deed of r. Sihojo Wongsowidjojo in Jakarta No. 71 tang-gal June 19, 1963.

At that time, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has three (3) Faculty, namely (1) the Faculty of Economics, Faculty of law (2), and (3) the Faculty of teacher training and educational sciences (FTTE) Department of religious education. The third faculty received the status of Registered by the Ministry of education and culture, the Directorate General of higher education in 1966 by Decree No. 68/B-Swt/p/1991 dated December 30, 1966.

On July 1, 1968 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang officially became a University in its own right (apart from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta), held in the hands of the College Foundation of Muhammadiyah Malang, by notarial deed r. Sudiono, no. 2 dated July 1, 1968. On the next development of this certificate is then updated with the Notary g. Kamarudzaman No. 7 Dated June 6, 1975, and updated again by notarial deed Kumalasari, S.H. No. 026 dated November 24, 1988 and are listed on the hapless Country Court No. 88/PP/YYS/XI/1988 November 28, 1988.

In 1968, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang adds new faculties, namely the Faculty of Social Welfare, which is fi'lial from the Faculty of Social Welfare, University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta. Thus, at that time the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has had four faculties. In addition, the Department of religious Education and PEDAGOGY was registered as Faculty of religion within the auspices of the Ministry of religious affairs under the name of Faculty of Tarbiyah.

In 1970 the Faculty of Tarbiyah is getting an equal status with the College of Islamic studies (IAIN), with a Religious Decree Number 50 in 1970. In this year also the faculty changed its name to Social Welfare, Faculty of social sciences with the Social Welfare Department. Then in 1975 the Faculty is officially established itself (apart from the University of Muhammadiyah Jakarta) and Decree No. 022 Registered A/1/1992 dated 16 April 1975.

The Faculty is the Faculty of engineering is then added, namely in 1977. In 1980 opened also the Faculty of agriculture, then following the Faculty of animal husbandry. Between 1983 to 1993, added new majors and upgraded the status of the suudah majors there. The last, in 1993 the University of Muhammadiyah Malang opened the Graduate School of management master's degree Courses and the master of Rural Sociology

Until the academic year 1994/1995, the University of Muhammadiyah Malang has 9 faculties and 25 department/graduate level courses Si, two courses on strata-S2, and a Nursing/strata-D3 Academy.

In the span of thirty years of travel this UMM (1964-1994), the most meaningful development was started in 1983. from that point onwards UMM noted a very impressive progress, in the field of improvement of the status of balk majors, in revamping the Administration, the addition of facilities and campus facilities, as well as the addition and improvement of the quality management personnel (Administration and academic). In 2009, UMM combines the Faculty of agriculture and Faculty of livestock-Fisheries into the Faculty of agriculture and animal husbandry to fit the Agricultural Sciences Consortium.

In the field of means of physical and academic facilities, have now been available three campuses: Campus I in Bandung Street no. 1, campus II on the road No. 188a Sutami Dams, and the campus III (Integrated Campus) on highways Tlogo Mas. In the field of improving the quantity and quality of academic personnel, has been performed (1) recruitment of young lecturers from various leading universities in Java Island, (2) improving the quality of their lecturers by sending them for further studies (S2 and S3) both inside and outside the country.

Thanks to the struggle that knows no stopping it, now University of Muhammadiyah Malang was transformed into an alternative direction for higher education. It is already recognized by a Regional Coordinator of the Universities in his official speech VII on graduation Bachelor University of Muhammadiyah Malang July 11, 1992, States that the College qualifies as a UMM bigger and berprospek to become the College's future.

With the conditions that are constantly improved, now University of Muhammadiyah Malang with proud but humble ready "facing future, to participate in a joint task" sharpen the nation "and" building "in Indonesia as a whole human being to become a dignified nation of Indonesia and in line with the other Nations in the world
